You cannot NOT communicate

I have never felt that words as necessary to communicate. For those who are literate and are unable to read, there are many alternate forms of communication. So when the book mentions that we would be lost without type do not completely agree. I do however feel that it is possible for words to depict a certain meaning or mood just by the way the type is rendered. Just as the book mentions, words that are important and carry much weight are often bolded and much larger than the rest of the text. For example, http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000063XKE.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg, on the cover of this Reader's Digest magazine, the major articles are in large bold text and hold most of the viewers' attention, where as the smaller stories that may not be as important are placed at the side of the cover and no as dominate in size. If type were not added to this cover, I may not have a detailed description of what the stories were about, but I would know that the magazine housed a wide variety of articles about different celebrities.
Aside from importance, type can also convey mood. http://www.wallystrampolines.com//images/headfoot/logo.gif Looking at the image on the right, one can infer that this company definately likes to mix work with play. I would look for an adverisement like this if I were looking for a babysitter or a kid's gm or something. But day that I was looking fo a company to invest money and buy stock in, I would probably look for something that was a liitle bit more professional and serious such as the "Powerful MLS solutions" webpage.
Good type is very rarely noticed, but bad type could mean that your product or company is overlooked. So choosing the right kind of type is a risky business.
